OBATAKE

A private thatched-roof farmhouse in Miyama, offering rare silence, natural beauty, and a timeless stay in the heart of satoyama.

◆OBATAKE – A Private Thatched-Roof Stay in Miyama

OBATAKE is a private thatched-roof farmhouse in Miyama, Kyoto, where guests can rent the entire property and experience the quiet beauty of rural Japan. Surrounded by mountains and a peaceful village atmosphere, it offers a rare opportunity to stay in a living piece of Japanese heritage with modern comfort.

◆The Most Beautiful Village in Miyama

The village where OBATAKE stands is a dead-end valley, meaning there is no passing traffic and no crowds. Only local residents and guests enter the area, preserving a deep sense of calm. With a river running through the village, you can hear birdsong and flowing water throughout the day.

◆Restoring the Original Thatched Roof

Originally, OBATAKE had a true thatched roof, but it was covered with metal sheets about 30 years ago. During renovation, we removed the metal covering and restored the house to its authentic thatched-roof form, bringing back the natural beauty that belongs to Miyama’s landscape.

◆A Renovation Guided by Tradition

Our renovation philosophy was to hide modern materials such as iron, aluminum, and plastic as much as possible. We wanted the exterior to remain timeless, natural, and harmonious with the satoyama scenery, just as a thatched farmhouse should be.

◆Rare Noto Hiba Wood Interiors

Inside the house, we used a generous amount of Japanese hiba wood, filling the rooms with a gentle natural fragrance. Some of the materials are of the same high quality as those used in the restoration of Kanazawa Castle, adding unique value to the space.

◆Main House with Private Comfort

The Main House includes a tatami room that can also serve as a tea room, offering a peaceful traditional atmosphere. The bedroom was renovated into a private space equipped with its own bathroom, washbasin, and toilet, combining comfort with tradition.

◆A Dreamlike Attic Room

The attic was originally used as a storage space for drying kaya (thatch). We installed a staircase and transformed it into a unique room where guests can relax in silence. It is perfect for reading, meditation, or yoga, surrounded by the mysterious structure of the thatched roof.

◆OBATAKE Annex Bedroom

Next to the Main House, OBATAKE Annex provides a separate bedroom built entirely from Japanese hiba wood. This additional space makes it easier to invite friends or another couple, allowing everyone to enjoy comfort and privacy during the stay.

◆Three Sleeping Options for Groups

OBATAKE offers three sleeping spaces: the Main House bedroom, the tatami room with futons, and the Annex bedroom. This layout allows families and groups to stay together while keeping a comfortable distance and personal space.

◆A Living Model for the Future

OBATAKE is not simply preserved as an old house. It is a step forward—a model for how thatched-roof farmhouses can survive in modern times, while still protecting their original spirit and beauty.
