OBATAKE Main House – Restoring the True Thatched Roof

The Main House of OBATAKE was restored by removing the metal roof and bringing back its original thatched roof. Inside, fragrant hiba wood creates a calming atmosphere, including materials of the same quality used in the restoration of Kanazawa Castle. The house combines traditional tatami spaces with a private bedroom equipped with its own bathroom, washbasin, and toilet.

Project Info

Project Description

The Main House of OBATAKE was once covered with a metal sheet roof placed over the original thatch. During the renovation, we carefully removed the metal covering and restored the thatched roof to its authentic form. With this restoration, the beauty and spirit of a true thatched-roof farmhouse returned to OBATAKE once again.

Inside the house, we used a generous amount of Japanese hiba wood for the interior design. The natural fragrance of the wood fills the rooms, creating a calm and deeply relaxing atmosphere. Some of the hiba used here is of the same high quality as the material used in the restoration of Kanazawa Castle, making it even more special.

The tatami room has also been designed to function as a tea room, offering a quiet and traditional space where guests can slow down and experience the peaceful rhythm of Japanese life.

In addition, the bedroom was renovated into a private and comfortable space equipped with its own bathroom, washbasin, and toilet.

Traditionally, houses in Miyama are centered around tatami rooms, and bathrooms, washrooms, and toilets are usually shared spaces. However, at OBATAKE, we made a unique attempt to create a more private bedroom, while still respecting the traditional structure of the farmhouse.

The engawa veranda is enclosed with glass, adding a beautiful and nostalgic atmosphere. It allows you to enjoy the scenery outside while staying warm and comfortable indoors.

OBATAKE Main House is a rare place where traditional thatched-roof beauty and modern comfort come together in perfect balance.
